3. Introduction

The DA14535 SmartBond TINY™ Module is a Renesas Bluetooth® Low Energy module based on the ultra-low power DA14535 SoC. The module offers a unique combination of the lowest power and the integration of all external components including antenna at a very affordable price. The module is designed to enable the use of Bluetooth® Low Energy in applications where Bluetooth® Low Energy could not be used until now because of cost or complexity. The bigger picture is to drive Bluetooth® Low Energy technology into every application, turning every product into a connected IoT node to drive the next 1 billion IoT devices in the market. The combination of an affordable price, the lowest power consumption and ease of use makes the DA14535 TINY™ Module an ideal product for the mass market, including the makers community.

The development kit includes a set of hardware (development board with an on-board debugger) and is supported by a Software Development Kit SDK6 (that is, a development toolchain, source code examples, and so on), and documentation.

The DA14535 module overcomes pinning constraints with a pre-programmed secondary bootloader in flash. On startup, it transitions from the default ROM booter to the secondary bootloader, enabling 2-wire UART (on pins P0_0/ P0_1) in step 4 of the booting sequence. The module also contains an image advertising SUOTA, facilitating new image downloads. Despite pin constraints, the bootloader supports 1-wire UART (on pin P0_5) and 2-wire UART interfaces. The dual image bootloader, discussed in the SmartBoot document, serves as a foundation for Software Update Over The Air (SUOTA) applications.
